Math Practice
Encourage your child to practice math facts each day with their homework. They can access the everyday math games (see homework assignment page for the link), they can use flash cards, you can ask them facts or post several facts to learn each week. Children should know (without counting) the facts to 10+ 10 and 20 - 10 by the end of the year.
- Are you wondering how we are teaching double digit addition? Here is a sample:
- T O
- 6 6
- +
- 2 5
- ____
- 8 0 Add the 10s first.. 6 tens plus 2 tens equals 8 tens
- 1 1 Add the ones 6 plus 5 equals 11
- ___
- 9 1 add the two together 80 plus 11 equals 91
- Your children may use the traditional algorithm, but they will use this in class because it builds on their understanding of tens and ones, and the idea of adding the tens and then adding the ones when the problem is written as:
- 66 + 25 = ___ Students add 60 + 20 = 80 and then 6 + 5 = 11. They then add 80 + 11 to get 91
